It is that time of year here at the greenhouse when time is valuable for everyone, especially our customers. Listed below are a few tips to help make the most of your visit:
- Dress in layers...it can be cold and then hot within nano seconds.
- Drink lots of H2O. We do have water available, or bring your own.
- Bring pictures of any areas you are working on and/or be aware of how much sun, shade (watch the sun/shade pattern of an area for the entire day), soil type and color scheme you have.
- We do have a wheel chair that can be used if you need. We have sidewalks that enable you to reach most of the areas of our greenhouse by wheel chair. Just ask at the Retail desk and we will get the chair for you.
- Make a list. This seems like a simple idea, but just like the grocery store, if you sit down before coming (or start now and keep a running list) and write down areas that you need plants for and maybe even some ideas of plants you have used before, you’ll find it easier to make your selections.
- Ask questions. We love to help. Sometimes we are extra busy, but look for someone in an Edwards shirt and they will be glad to help or find someone who can.
- Pick up a map. There will be maps of the general layout of Edwards available in the Retail area.
We can’t wait to see you! Hope these ideas make your visit even better!
Seed Savers
This year we are carrying a line of seeds from a company that is as special as its product.
Seed Savers Exchange is a company that was founded in 1975 by Diane and Kent Whealy, after her terminally-ill grandfather gave them the seeds of two garden plants, Grandpa Ott’s Morning Glory and German Pink Tomato. His parents brought them from Bavaria when they immigrated to St. Lucas, Iowa in the 1870’s. It is a non profit organization that saves and shares the heirloom seeds of our garden heritage.
They are building a network of people committed to collecting, conserving and sharing heirloom seeds and plants. “Few gardeners comprehend the true scope of their garden heritage or how much is in immediate danger of being lost forever.” When you purchase their seeds, you help to maintain Heritage Farm, the 890 acre farm near Decorah, Iowa that is home to their collection of over 24,000 rare vegetable varieties. Each summer 10% of each crop is planted on a 10 year rotation to renew the seed collection. They encourage you to purchase heirloom varieties and then save the seed yourself for future use.
