Is It That Time Already? By Bonnie Molyneux Yes, another planting season is upon us! The annual and specialty departments have been busy since December planting away so you will have enough plants to fill your garden! One of the new specialties that is awaiting you is the Euphorbia Cotinfolia -‘Burgundy Wine’. It has yellow blooms with burgundy foliage. Another is the Anagallis hybrid- ‘Cinnamon’ that likes full sun and is a low creeper with small rose-colored and spicy fragrant flowers. For the last several years we have had the Perilla, ‘Magilla’ that has bright fuchsia and green colored foliage. This year we are adding the Perilla - ‘Vanilla’ that has beautiful lime green colored leaves. This plant will get about 24” tall, 12” wide and loves the sun. One or two of these in front of a Purple Fountain Grass would be a sight to see. Arctotis hybrid - Pumpkin Pie (African Daisy) is another new one that does full sun, has silver foliage and bright orange-red daisy-like blossoms. It is a profuse bloomer all season if it is deadheaded and fertilized occasionally. For the shade we have planted several new varieties. One of my favorites is the Fuchsia ‘Dollar Princess. Dollar Princess is a trailing fuchsia that is heat tolerant. This means that it still likes the shade but is more adaptable to our hot, dry summer climate. Then we have some wonderful new ferns for this season. We have the Australian Tree Fern that will take morning sun, is fast growing, and will get up to 30’ in height and 20’ in width when mature. This would be one that you will want to plant in a container so it can be taken inside in the late fall. The Variegated Brake Fern is another fun shade plant that will do great indoors or out. This particular
one will do fantastic in a dark shady area of the yard, but remember this is only an annual in our area. Finally, the fern I believe is going to be my favorite this year is the Long John Pendulant. It too is a shade lover and will grow to 20’ in length!! It will do nicely as a houseplant as well, but be patient, as it will take around two years to get its length. As you can see, we have been very busy trying to get all the new plants growing so they will be ready by May for your enjoyment throughout the growing season. These new items are just a drop in the bucket of the colorful plants we have waiting for you. Where Have The Herbs Gone?
So, you come into the greenhouse expecting to see the herbs and veggies in their usual place. Not so this year. We had the bright idea that the herbs and vegetables would like a house of their own. We hope that by placing them all in one greenhouse, shopping will be more convenient for you. The herbs and veggies are now located in “K” and “L” houses, the first houses off Sand Creek Street by the office door. What could be easier than parking, walking across the street, make your purchases and off you go. At least that is our dream for you. Oh, did we forget to tell you that the kiosk will be open across from “L” house. Now what could be faster and easier than that, we ask you? Kate has been working hard to get a good setup that will make it easier to shop. It may take us a season to fine tune how we are going to arrange the inside, but we are hoping you will like the changes. If you have any problem finding what you need, the herbs and veggies crew will be more than happy to help you. ![]()
