Circle of Life

Circle of Life Gardening is America's number one pastime. It creates beauty that enriches our lives. Increasingly, gardeners also realize that gardening activities should also be healthful to the environment. In the last few years we have seen a great increase in the use of natural products, from organic fertilizers, safer natural pesticides, to the use of compost teas. However, while organic food is becoming commonplace in our grocery stores, we rarely see ornamental plants that are produced organically in our nurseries. This season the time is ripe for a change - a new line of annuals and perennials that are grown with truly sustainable practices will appear in our nursery under the banner Circle of Life.

The Circle of Life project is an initiative of the Ball Horticultural Company. The goal of the program is to introduce plants which are not only appealing to environmentally conscious gardeners, but also plants which are of superior quality. Gardeners who have tried natural products in their gardens can attest to the fact that their plants perform better when treated this way. These plants are grown by local growers who endeavor to grow according to biological principles. Naturally grown ornamentals have stronger roots, and they are more tolerant to environmental stresses and resistant to diseases and pests.

As the weather warms up, and the gardening season looms ahead, our choices of how to plant and what to plant will follow. Plants grown in a manner that enhances the health of the root system and builds beneficial soil biology will handle the stress of the seasons, both wet and dry, with grace and ease. Adding compost and building organic matter have never been as important as now, and choosing the right plants that will perform well will protect your investments. Support your local leaders in the nursery world that are embracing these ideals by looking for Circle of Life plants.
